The English golfer Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Battle Versus Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff following a topsy-turvy last day of competition.
The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie putt from around eight feet to seal the win, echoing his sole prior tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off win against the same opponent.
Final Round Excitement
Rai started the final round with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
Fleetwood moved one shot clear with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last green.
Play-Off Climax
That led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to claim the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in prize money.

The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to do, finishing one shot short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under final round of 62. It was his lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.
The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of leading the standings were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell hit an superb final-round 63 to end up tied for fifth with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
