Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is exiting the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a series of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
The economist remarked in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, excited about the potential of the company, and eagerly await observing their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who once led Harvard University, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
Message Exchange
The recently released emails demonstrated that the official corresponded with the financier until the day before Epstein's 2019 apprehension for alleged sex trafficking of young people.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company stated it understood the economist's choice to step down.
"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the insight he brought to the directors," OpenAI stated.
Political Context
This development arrives after the two houses of the US legislature voted on Tuesday to approve a measure that would require the US justice department to make public its files on Epstein.
The measure will then head to the desk of President Trump for endorsement. Trump has stated he plans to approve the bill, after reversing his view on the subject following pressure from his base.
Email Contents
A collection of Epstein-related emails made public by the legislative panel days ago mentioned multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's former circle, without implying any illegal behavior by those figures.
The messages showed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often seeking to connect the official to prominent world leaders.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were released with the public, the former official said he took "total ownership for my misguided choice to continue communicating with the financier".
He added that he wanted "to rebuild trust and mend relationships with the individuals most important to me".
Previous Positions
Summers held high-level positions under party leaders; acting as treasury secretary under the former president, and as director of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He led Harvard from five years and remains a professor there. When announcing his step-down from public roles earlier on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Other Impacts
Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal policy institute in the capital where he was a senior fellow, announced that Summers was no longer affiliated with the organization.
He entered the board of the technology firm, which makes the language model, in the previous year - following a defeated move to replace its chief executive OpenAI's head.
