The Canadian skeleton team have been absolved of accusations that they rigged a qualifying event for the Winter Olympics, thereby denying competitors from other nations a chance to secure their place.

US skeleton veteran a five-time Olympian alleged the team from Canada of pulling four of its six entered athletes from a race in Lake Placid. The allegation was this reduced the field, making fewer qualifying points available. Despite winning the event, the American athlete did not secure her qualifying position for the 2026 Olympics.

“Existing federation regulations allow member nations to withdraw athletes from competition at any time,” stated the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF).

After reviewing the matter, the IBSF announced it would not impose sanctions, dismissing the complaints as no rules were broken of its code.

Canada's Explanation

In response, the Canadian federation defended the decision, citing athlete welfare and the need for rest. They stated that the individuals pulled had already raced multiple times that week and the move was “appropriate, clear and aligned with both their well-being and the sport's fairness.”

Coaches from several affected nations had previously expressed “deep worry” about the qualification process.
